About the Graduate Student Programming & Pedagogy Unit: 

The Graduate Student Programming & Pedagogy Unit prepares graduate students to serve as teaching assistants (TAs) or instructors at Penn. Over 100 teaching workshops are offered annually, fostering skill development and envisioning future faculty roles. Programs include TA training and orientation for new doctoral, master's, and PhD students, equipping them for classroom, lab, and instructional team roles. Cohort-based learning programs on a variety of teaching topics are also available, ranging from four weeks to a full academic year.

About the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Innovation (CETLI):  

Collaborating with instructors, graduate students, staff, programs and offices across the university, CETLI: 

  • Supports all instructors from senior faculty to new teaching assistants in realizing their teaching aims and developing as teachers;

Required Duties

Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Graduate Student Programming & Pedagogy, the Graduate Data Analyst and Research Assistant for Graduate Student Educator Development analyzes program data, conducts background research and provides other support for current CETLI teaching assistant and learning assistant orientation and training programs. This role also helps the graduate student programming and pedagogy unit meet emerging needs.  

 

Responsibilities may include:  

  • Analyzing attendance data and preparing reports on Teaching Assistant (TA) and Learning Assistant (LA) orientation and training program evaluation 
  • Analyzing registration and attendance data and preparing reports on graduate student educational development programming (workshops and mini-courses) 
  • Assisting with logistics of TA and LA orientation program implementation 
  • Surveying past graduate student programming participants  
  • Drafting and formatting research summaries, Leaning Management System (Canvas) content, orientation materials, and other resources 
  • Researching effective strategies and practices related to peer education, orientation programs, and pedagogy for graduate teaching assistants and undergraduate teaching and learning assistants 
  • Attending workshops and other programming to provide support and gather information on participant experiences 
  • Meeting with internal and external contacts to identify needs, gather information, and share effective practices 

 

This position offers a unique opportunity to work centrally at Penn and interact with a wide variety of disciplines and stakeholders. This position is also an opportunity to utilize research and data analysis to inform practice, develop skills and strategies for communicating effectively with different stakeholders, and to provide support for graduate student programming about teaching.

A strong candidate for this position should:  

  • Identify with CETLI’s mission of supporting teaching excellence and innovation 
  • Be flexible and able to adapt to changing needs 
  • Be self-directed, organized, innately curious, interested in problem-solving, and comfortable with independently learning new topics, skills, and technologies 
  • Have intermediate to advanced computer skills and mastery of Microsoft Office applications as well as familiarity with Google Suite applications 
  • Have experience in data management and data analysis, including the ability to research, summarize, and analyze quantitative and qualitative information 
  • Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail and possess excellent oral and written communication skills 

 

Though not required, please indicate any previous experiences with teaching, peer facilitating or student support.
