Overview

Penn GSE Tutoring Initiative
Launched in 2023, this program builds elementary and middle school students’ foundational math and literacy skills through a joy-based approach to learning. GSE students, Penn undergrads, and community members provide one-on-one academic intervention designed by GSE faculty and staff. Drawing on research about the power of individualized support—especially in response to the impacts of COVID-19—the program emphasizes relationship-building, with tutors seeing the same students consistently over many months. In addition to helping students become better at reading and problem solving, the program aims to cultivate confidence and belonging, so that students see themselves long-term as readers and problem-solvers and find joy and meaning in their learning.

In Spring 2025, the program will serve K-8 students at the Henry C. Lea School (47th & Locust) and the Andrew Hamilton School (57th & Spruce).

Position Overview
