Overview

The Graduate School Mentoring Initiative (GSMI) is intended to facilitate interest and confidence in Penn First Plus (P1P) undergraduate students, (many of whom are first generation and/or from limited income backgrounds) to consider applying to graduate school. The program is designed to support students from the Fall of their Junior year through their first semester as seniors. However, interested students across classification can apply. The optimal cohort might consist of 40 students.

Required Duties

Under the supervision and direction of a professional staff member, the GSMI graduate coordinator will assist in overseeing the planning, coordination, and implementation of the program, which will include but is not limited to:

  • Recruiting 40 undergraduate students for participation in GSMI 
  • Recruiting graduate student mentors from among Penn’s 12 graduate schools
  • Coordinating 2-3 workshops per semester, focusing on various aspects of the graduate school preparation process 
  • Organizing 2 Mentoring Mixers per semester that are community dinners for the entire cohort
  • Creating and disseminating marketing materials 
  • Providing continued communication and maintenance of relationships with previously established partners across campus 
  • Maintaining correspondence with recruited mentees and mentors, as the lead liaison for GSMI
  • Creating mentoring matches and facilitating near peer relationships with all parties 
  • Carrying out administrative responsibilities as assigned to support strategic goals of P1P and PennCAP

 

 

Preferred Qualification and Essential Skills

  • Interest in working with academically talented first-generation college students and/or students coming from limited income backgrounds
  • Willingness to work on projects independently and with limited supervision
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, while embracing flexibility and adaptability
  • Ability to bring multiple campus partners together to collaborate and innovate programming tailored to a specific audience
  • Highly detail-oriented while remaining focused on long-term goals for programming 
  • Experience with online platforms such as Canvas, Canva, Teams, Microsoft Office, and newsletters and social media sites 
  • Having a strong sense of self-awareness and professional etiquette
