Work Hours and Commitment:
20 hours in-person per week throughout the academic year. Hours must be scheduled Monday through Friday, between 9am and 5pm. Attendance at weekend and evening events is required to support student engagement opportunities. This may include up to four day-long or half-day weekend events and four weekday evening events each in the fall and spring.

Pay Rate:
$20.00/hr

Overview

Department Overview

Penn Abroad serves as the hub for student global opportunities at the University of Pennsylvania. Each year the University sends over 2,500 Penn students to more than 50 countries around the world on semester study abroad, summer internships, service learning, and short-term programs. Penn Abroad facilitates key travel programs for undergraduates, including Study Abroad (SA), the Global Research & Internship Program (GRIP), Penn Global Seminars (PGS), and Exchange at Penn (EAP).

Role Overview

The GA works closely with Penn Abroad’s Associate Director, primarily supporting inbound student programming. The GA has the potential to develop skills and/or fields of knowledge through their assigned work including:

  • Student affairs-focused communication and event planning
  • Student advising, leadership, and mentorship
  • Office systems and procedures
  • Flexibility and time management
  • Incoming exchange and education abroad student services and programming

Required Duties

  • Plan and implement student activities for incoming exchange students in coordination with Penn Abroad staff, including off-campus exchange student excursions, new student orientation for visiting international students, and other on-campus events for incoming exchange students including the bi-annual semester farewell event.
  • Facilitate Penn Abroad’s student support initiatives, which includes overseeing a group of exchange student leaders and supporting them in their event planning and engagement initiatives, creating and distributing the weekly exchange student newsletter, responding to student correspondences, and providing drop-in student support.
  • Participate in ongoing projects to support Penn Abroad’s programs.
  • Provide front desk coverage by answering telephones and greeting visitors.
  • Provide general office support for Penn Abroad staff.
  • Other projects as assigned.

Preferred Qualification and Essential Skills

  • Interest in global education and a commitment to student service
  • Effective cross-cultural communication skills and ability to work with a diverse group of students
  • Proven ability to take initiative, prioritize, and multitask within time constraints
  • Willingness to jump in and take on a variety of tasks as needed by the office
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google documents

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous study abroad or international experience
