Overview
Interested in teaching and working with K-12 students from West Philadelphia public schools? Have a passion for STEM? Would you like a leadership role managing undergraduate students?
The MAS Fellows Supervisor is a graduate student PAID position that supervises undergraduate students in service-learning placements at West Philadelphia public schools. This position is through the the Netter Center for Community Partnerships which is part of Penn, and thus we are able to employ both international and domestic students in this position. The supervisor is in charge of visiting student placements to check in with students about their experiences as well as provide support and development around working with K-12 youth. The supervisor will oversee approximately 50 Penn students across multiple sites each semester.
Moelis Access Science (MAS) Fellows seek to enrich science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education for students in grades K-12 at the Netter Center’s University-Assisted Community Schools through hands-on, inquiry-based activities (i.e. labs, experiments, collaborative activities, tutoring, and small group support). MAS Fellows lead the activities with students and teacher partners during school day and after school programs, depending on the site and the subject. MAS has several student-led departments including: Biology/Environmental Science, Chemistry, K-8 Science Enrichment, Math/Computer Science, and Physics/Engineering. MAS fellows visit their school placements a minimum of once a week. More weekly visits are welcome! Fellows are matched with classrooms based on their schedules as well as their interests. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in curriculum development, reflection on their classroom experiences, and skills workshops in order to develop strong relationships with young people.
Founded in 1992, the Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships is the University's primary vehicle for advancing civic and community engagement at Penn. It brings together the resources and assets of both the University and the wider community to help solve universal problems such as poverty, health inequities, environmental sustainability, and inadequate, unequal education as they are manifested in the University's local geographic area of West Philadelphia and Philadelphia at large. The Netter Center develops and helps implement democratic, mutually transformative, place-based partnerships between Penn and West Philadelphia that advance research, teaching, learning, and service. These partnerships help improve the quality of life on campus and in the community. The Netter Center works with and serves as a model for other higher education institutions across the United States and around the world.
